The staff at YUKON feels good about being in the hardwood lumber business and we want to stay in business for a good while longer. For these reasons, it is our policy to purchase lumber products only from reputable sources who promote and are actively engaged in sustainable forest management practices. Here are a few facts because we want you to feel good about using wood as well. * Wood is natural, organic, renewable, nontoxic, recyclable and biodegradable. * Wood helps to conserve energy. Turning a tree into sawn wood or veneer requires less energy and produces minimal pollution compared to the large amounts of electricity and heat needed to process other materials. * There are more trees today than there were 100 years ago. In the northeastern U.S., this is particularly true. * Most countries, regardless of the governmental system used, have national forestry laws and management plans to which everyone must adhere. * The major causes of deforestation in the tropics are population pressures/shifting agriculture. NOT logging. * Good markets for wood & wood products will help save the forests. The land MUST be made more valuable with trees than without them. * The forest products industry employs tens of millions of people in developing countries, providing a standard of living for employees and their families previously unattainable.
